It’s time to register your child for kindergarten! We’re here to help you understand the steps you need to take. Typically, you will register your child for kindergarten in the spring before their first day of school. Registration dates and processes vary by district, as does the first day of school and age requirements. For information generally about each district, see the information below.
Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, your child must be at least 5 years of age on the first day of school. Since the start date for schools vary by district, you will need to check with your school district to determine whether your child will be 5 by the first day of the school year. While the specific steps can be different for each district, generally the process involves gathering paperwork, filling out an application, and visiting the school in person. This paperwork may include, but is not limited to:

Typically, children are enrolled for Kindergarten in the district they live in. Sometimes, school districts will accept children outside of their home school district for open enrollment after completing an application. Each school district has different rules for open enrollment, but should list this information on their website.
