When to Register Your Child
Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, your child must be at least 5 years of age on the first day of school. Since the start date for schools vary by district, you will need to check with your school district to determine whether your child will be 5 by the first day of the school year. For general information about kindergarten in the State of Ohio, check out the Department of Education and Workforce website here.
How to Register
While the specific steps can be different for each district, generally the process involves gathering paperwork, filling out an application, and visiting the school in person. This paperwork may include, but is not limited to:
- Parent or Guardian identification
- Child’s Birth Certificate
- Child’s shot records
- Proof of address
Documents Needed to Register
During the enrollment period, ensure that you have the proper documents ready to share with the school district to enroll your child. These documents may include, but are not limited to:
- Proof of Residency
- Birth Certificate
- Immunization Records
- Possibly other documents like your child’s health records
Registering in Other School Districts
Typically, children are enrolled for Kindergarten in the district they live in. Sometimes, school districts will accept children outside of their home school district for open enrollment after completing an application. Each school district has different rules for open enrollment, but should list this information on their website.
